First Time Fantasy

I had drunk one too many aperitifs and was on my third glass of wine. Not exactly how I pictured my first time – picking players for an NHL Fantasy Draft that is. I signed up through my favorite Habs website, Habsinsideout, and though I’ve participated in many hockey pools, this was my first time venturing into the realm of Fantasy sports.

My track record with hockey pools has been pretty good – last spring I won the Gainey Foundation Playoff pool, and I generally finish in the top three in my office pools (save for that one season when I seemed to be a defensive curse, and all my defense picks ended up on the IR).

All that to say, last night at 9:00 p.m. I logged in to the ESPN NHL Fantasy room, joined the HIO Habs Fans only league, and got ready for my first pick. We are about 20 teams, each filling a 22-man roster, with 5 bench spots. That’s 440 players being picked. It took over 2 hours and needless to say, by the fifth round, the pickings were slim.

Our point structure is nothing out of the ordinary. As you can see below, there is a lot of potential for points with a good goalie pick, so I made that my priority. Also, as goals were worth more, I wanted high scoring defenseman, not the playmaker. As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions and my plan quickly crumbled.

My Picks:

I was the 8th pick out of 20. It was a snake draft, so second round I was 13th, and so on.

I was really looking forward to picking Pekke Rinne as one of my goalies, and Dustin Brown just slipped out of my reach. So I don’t know. It can go either way. I will give updates periodically on my soaring success or the biggest Fantasy fail of 2010-2011!
