Game 7: The Good and the Annoying

I woke up this morning to my spouse asking me if the Habs had won – it was a terrible way to wake up. I explained to her that no, the Habs had lost in OT, but it was a valiant effort. “That’s too bad” she said. But I knew in her heart she was a tad happy – it meant I was back.

As she left for work, I lied in bed reflecting on the game and have come up with two lists. The first is the bright side of what happened, the second list is the annoying stuff that will now follow.

The Bright Side

  • Our city did not get destroyed, no cop cars were burned
If there is one thing we can count on, it’s that riots only happen when the Habs win. With the OT game 7 loss, our city was saved from the inevitable morning headlines of cops cars on fire, and stores looted.
    Yay us!
  • I won’t gain weight in playoff beer and pub food
Last year was great for my soul, bad for my body. Four nights a week of beer, bad food, and late week nights = an out of shape and beer-bellied summer.
  • I can now cheer wholeheartedly for my second team: The San Jose Sharks
I’m a Habs fan first, but playoff hockey isn’t over! Thankfully my 2nd team is still in it, and there is a ton of great hockey to be played.
  • The Habs have 3-4 amazing roster additions they get to make this summer FOR FREE!
Gorges, Pacioretty, Desharnais, and (fingers crossed) Markov. Not too shabby!

The Annoying

  • Non-hockey/Habs fans wanting to discuss the outcome with me
I’m not a hockey-snob, but nothing grates me more than a headline-reader wanting to debate the game with me. It was a great game, enough said. No one was at fault. Just because you listened to the radio this morning, doesn’t mean you are now an expert on how it was all “Price’s fault”. You didn’t even know who Carey Price was until this morning.
  • The radio
I listen to the radio all day at work. I will not be able to do that for the next 2 weeks (at least)
  • Boston fans in my office
This doesn’t need an explanation, does it?
  • The knowledge that some of these guys won’t be back next year
I get attached to the team…and as much as I am sometimes frustrated by their play (ehm POULIOT), it’s weird to think of them in another uniform come September.

They fought hard last night, and it was anyone’s game. Good job boys! See you in the Fall…
