Dreaming of John…

March 27, 2013

I'm going to say something crazy right now. I am aware it's a bit off the wall and I am aware that it probably won't happen, but I do think it's worth exploring. With trade deadline just a week away, we look at a list of UFA's and wonder where these rent-a-players will be headed for about a dozen games or so. But when I look at the list of UFA's and I look at the Habs number one need, I don't find a match.

Re-Alignment for Dummies

Re-Alignment for Dummies

I'm the dummy here, and I'm actually writing this post more for myself than anything. I read the press release from nhl.com today, and thought to myself "I have no idea what the hell they are talking about". I needed to break it down into a hypothetical situation to understand how this new format will work both in the playoffs and in the regular season. Below is my fake results from the 2013-2014 season. No need to comment on my point allocations. I made it up, with some obvious homer points.

5 Hockey Thoughts

February 28, 2013

EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING! Or at least enough is happening to warrant a blog post that summarizes my thoughts on many things. A few are “old news” but bare with me, I have feelings to share. NHL Realignment: Without having to explain to those not aware of the proposed realignment plan, let me tell you that I really like it. Firstly, having Detroit move over into our division rocks. That’s Toronto, Boston, Montreal, and Detroit – four of the original six – in the Habs division. Second: I am into the idea of wildcard spots for playoffs, it makes for some late season “need to win in regulation” drama. Though what I am most excited about is the potential of witnessing some Stanley Cup Final match-ups we haven’t seen in decades. Are the Habs legitimate contenders? I’ve actually been wanting to write a lengthy post answering this question (and may well do so...

Why we Lost to the Bruins

Why we Lost to the Bruins

I was at the game last night. I was excited to see, in person, these new Canadiens that skated, scored, and generally had some fun. I even predicted a 5-3 win for the Habs – it was only this past Saturday that they put up six goals against the Sabres. I went home last night, and pondered why the Habs had converted every opportunity against the Sabres, but could only muster a goal from a point shot against the Bruins. Then it dawned on me, the Bruins didn’t let the Habs crowd the crease and score those nifty back door goals we saw so many of on Saturday. The Bruins are just too good around their own net. Let me elaborate through my favourite new medium – the screen shot. On Saturday, 5 of the 6 Habs goals came from right at the edge of the crease. Goal 1...

<3 Andrei Markov

January 28, 2013

Yes, the Habs are off to their best start in three years. Yes, the Habs are FINALLY fun to watch again. Yes, we did beat the Devils and Marty Brodeaur, on home ice on a Sunday (has that ever happened in the history of ever?!). But let's talk about Markov, and let's talk about his OT goal last night. Was anyone else confused on how he started the play at the top of the blue line and then was suddenly by the post tapping in the winner? How did he get there? Why was he there? Cole was already standing there, but Markov stood in the better spot. The obvious conclusion, Markov sees into the future.

Lists: Things I like about hockey

Lists: Things I like about hockey

I spoke at my high school career day today – which was an odd and humbling experience. High school teachers have a rough gig. 20 blank faces just staring at you. I had 45 minutes to fill, and it was tough going, I don't have that much to say about my career, and I was counting on endless questions about the fascinating world of Marketing and Communications. Blank faces. I guess the world of Marketing and Communications isn't as riveting as I had hoped. Anyhow, in my desperate attempt to fill the void I went on a hockey rant. Don't ask me how I got there, but I was asked at one point "why do you like hockey THIS much?". Good question young-teen, good question.

No NHL? No Problem. Check out the CWHL instead.

Yesterday afternoon I happened to be invited to go watch Olympic calibre hockey. "Olympic calibre !" you ask.. "hockey!?" you say... That is correct my fellow hockey lovers. The Canadian Women's Hockey League, the CWHL.

Ode to a Lost Spring

Ode to a Lost Spring

My bixi stand is up and running. Next week I'm removing my winter tires. But something isn't sitting right. The fact that there will be no Habs playoffs this year has finally sunk in. I thought it would be best to express my sad feelings in the form of a poem. It might help the mood of this post if you picture me reading this poem, dressed in a black turtle neck and alone on a stage with a single spotlight focused on me and my tears.

Predictions: I suck

March 22, 2012

Eight games left in the season... I feel that now is a good time to look back at my season's predictions and laugh about how little I actually know. This is a humbling exercise because I think I got maybe 1 or 2 right.
