Lists: Things I like about hockey

I spoke at my high school career day today – which was an odd and humbling experience. High school teachers have a rough gig. 20 blank faces just staring at you. I had 45 minutes to fill, and it was tough going, I don't have that much to say about my career, and I was counting on endless questions about the fascinating world of Marketing and Communications. Blank faces. I guess the world of Marketing and Communications isn't as riveting as I had hoped. Anyhow, in my desperate attempt to fill the void I went on a hockey rant. Don't ask me how I got there, but I was asked at one point "why do you like hockey THIS much?". Good question young-teen, good question.

Which was worse?

Which was worse?

Last night a fellow Habs fan on Twitter mentioned that this is the worst season for the Habs. I disagreed, I said the Centennial season was worse. In truth, both are terrible so let's compare and contrast to come up with the truly worst season of the Habs. Though to be fair, this season isn't over yet – things might totally change between now and April, in which case I will just delete this post :) I've broken down the post into categories; expectations, offseason, regular season moves, on-ice drama, off-ice drama. For each category I chose a "winner" for the worst season. My conclusion ties it all together. Though to be fair, this season isn't over yet – things might totally change between now and April, in which case I will just delete this post :) I've broken down the post into categories; expectations, offseason, regualar season moves, on-ice drama,...

Wild Night in the NHL

I could talk about the Habs 3-2 win over the Panthers, but being at the game was tortuous enough, I don't want to relive the chippiest, unflow-y game ever. There were far more interesting story lines last night. Firstly, Brent Johnson KO on DiPietro.

Weekend Round up: Sens Whoppin’ and Saku’s Return

Weekend Round up: Sens Whoppin’ and Saku’s Return

It was my favorite kind of weekend  – Friday and Saturday night hockey, coupled with a relaxing Sunday that saw me cooking a whole lot. Poor Sens Fans It’s rare that I genuinely pity another hockey club, but my heart goes out to all the Senator fans worldwide (though based on that performance,  I’m doubtful the Senators have a global following, let alone an Ottawa Valley following). Watching the game Friday night was reminiscent of the many games us Habs fan had to endure in the second half of the season-that-shall-not-be-named (hint: it start with a 1 and ends with 00). No effort, no will to compete. Case in point: The sixth goal. Kostitsyn came in on the forecheck and was literally given the puck by Kuba, then passed to a totally open Plekanec, who passed to a totally open Eller and Kostitsyn was able to get to the net for the rebound....

What I’d do for Saku

What I’d do for Saku

The return of Captain Koivu is Saturday night (like I needed to remind anyone). Lots of buzz about what the Habs should or should not do to honour the man who served our team for 13 years. Some say a slideshow of highlights at the beginning of the game, others say that type of honour is reserved for a player once he's retired. In my opinion, the slide show is a tired excuse for a ceremony. The Habs marketing team need to do something that says, "Hey Saku, nice to see you again, talk soon k?" Because at the end of the day, Saku Koivu is still playing hockey, and is playing for an opposing team. I understand he just isn't some other player coming back to play, but let's save the tear-fest for when he retires, until then, here are a couple of my suggestions that say both "you...

My Day as a Hab: A Photo Essay

My Day as a Hab: A Photo Essay

Last Spring I took part in the Bob Gainey Foundation Playoff Pool and thanks to a good start by the Sharks and Pronger, my team won the whole thing. The prize? Ice time at the Bell Centre! Yesterday morning, myself and 15 friends took to the ice and played a little hockey. It was probably the greatest Sunday morning I've ever had. I scored a goal, the siren went off, and honestly, I felt like I just won the Stanley Cup :) Instead of focusing on the Ranger's game of Saturday night (which was quite a game), this post will be dedicated to my 8am Sunday ice time. Photos courtesy of my good friend and wonderful photographer Dallas Currow. Her fiancée was one of my teamates and Dallas served as both professional ice photographer and cheerleader. When you are done reading this, you should head over to her blog or...

24/7 Pens/Caps: Please Sir, I want some more.

Happy Monday and Happy Two-Days-After-Patches-Made-Chara-Blow-His-Lid. I watched the Boston game at my in-laws on the tiniest TV from 1983, but even under those dire circumstances I was able to relish the Habs comeback to win. Today's post however will not be dedicated to the Saturday night win, but my Sunday morning into late-afternoon viewing of the HBO series 24/7 Penguins/Capitals – Road to the NHL Winter Classic.

Live Game: Sharks

Saturday afternoon I was at the Shark's game and as I said in a previous post, I was very eager to go to the game because my step-brother's best friend Torrey Mitchell play's for the Sharks. I haven't seen Torrey in maybe 5 years...

The Weekend & Reasons for Love

A win, a loss – it was Halloween and I drank a bit too much on both nights to give any kind of actual opinion. I am glad the Habs won with Auld, and from what I remember about the Florida game, they looked a little sluggish and surprise-surprise, went zero for whatever on the powerplay. That's okay, Markov's back right? Because I write this blog now, I am much more aware of when I miss a game, or when I am only half-watching. I mean, they do play 82-games a season (plus pre-season, plus playoffs), so sometimes the living of my life happens and I miss a game. This blog isn't a money-making venture, and that's okay because I do quite well in the job I am in, so I don't have that much guilt when I do miss a game. I write this blog because I love...

A Shocking Holiday Hockey Weekend

October 12, 2010

Lots of hockey this weekend, including a GREAT win by the Habs over the Penguins. Poor Fleury and friends, I'm sure the only thing they wanted for Thanksgiving was a win over the Habs, and with two minutes to go, it looked like it was in the bag. Well...Cammalleri gets two, Fleury let's in a softie,we get stellar goaltending and Crosby is held off the score sheet. What month is this again? May? As great as that win was, I don't want to talk about the Montreal Canadiens today, I want to talk about two crazy incidents that happened yesterday: The Devils dressing 15 skaters and the 'ol b.j. gesture by Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski

Recent Hockey F***ups

September 27, 2010

I'm tired of reading about Carey Price, talking about Carey Price, and analyzing glorified scrimmages. So instead of summing up yet another game where only eight or so legitimate NHLers dressed, I thought I would take a look back into recent history and list my favorite hockey fuck-ups. I have no specific time period or order. These are just five great terrible moments that sprung to mind as I began writing.
