Morning After: I liked the Shootout? (and Brian Burke)

Confession: I REALLY enjoyed that shootout last night! I am semi-ashamed to admit it, only because I am like a grumpy old man when it comes to this nouveau aspect of the game. But eight rounds in and my nail-biting habit was in FULL force. I liked that Louie LeBlanc got a chance in to shoot in front of the home crowd (even if he didn't get a shot off), I like that Carey *finally got a shootout win, but I don't like that the Habs lost two leads last night. When you go into OT because you scored an equalizer, any extra point is gravy. But when when you go into extra time because you are the team that couldn't close the deal, it's disappointing that you gave your opponents a point.

Which was worse?

Which was worse?

Last night a fellow Habs fan on Twitter mentioned that this is the worst season for the Habs. I disagreed, I said the Centennial season was worse. In truth, both are terrible so let's compare and contrast to come up with the truly worst season of the Habs. Though to be fair, this season isn't over yet – things might totally change between now and April, in which case I will just delete this post :) I've broken down the post into categories; expectations, offseason, regular season moves, on-ice drama, off-ice drama. For each category I chose a "winner" for the worst season. My conclusion ties it all together. Though to be fair, this season isn't over yet – things might totally change between now and April, in which case I will just delete this post :) I've broken down the post into categories; expectations, offseason, regualar season moves, on-ice drama,...

On Hockey and Language

December 19, 2011
By

I know I am going to get hell from someone for this post, but so be it, I’ve had to listen to the same circular arguments since Saturday a.m. and I’m annoyed. First, my own personal opinion: The head coach of the Montreal Canadiens should be the best man (or, imagine, woman) available for the job. If that person also happens to speak French, then all the better. It seems so simple doesn’t it? Best person for the job. It’s the motto that most companies use when hiring. Francois Gagnon was on TSN990 this morning and gave the example “If Alain Vignault or Claude Julien didn’t speak English, could they coach in Vancouver of Boston”. I almost crashed my car into a wall when I heard that. Of course they couldn’t coach in Vancouver or Boston. They couldn’t coach ANYWHERE. You know why? Because the language of the NHL locker...

Reactionary Reactionism

Reactionary Reactionism

The GM meeting is happening in sunny Boca Raton – if ever there was a location that stereotyped the NHL leadership, it's a golfing resort in southern Florida. Did no one think to suggest that maybe the location of the Golden Girls would only reinforce the idea that the NHL executive is past it's expiration date? Geography aside, the big news today is Bettman's 5-point plan otherwise known as, reactionary reactionism. Too little, too late Bettman, no amount of Office Space jargon, or powerpoint presentation lingo is going to change public opinion of you or your Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations who you affectionately call "Colie". I know I am nitpicking here, but I don't call my co-workers "Newty" or "Nady" or any other amalgamation of their last name with the letter "Y". It again just plays into the thought that Bettman is running an old...

Weekend Round up: Sens Whoppin’ and Saku’s Return

Weekend Round up: Sens Whoppin’ and Saku’s Return

It was my favorite kind of weekend  – Friday and Saturday night hockey, coupled with a relaxing Sunday that saw me cooking a whole lot. Poor Sens Fans It’s rare that I genuinely pity another hockey club, but my heart goes out to all the Senator fans worldwide (though based on that performance,  I’m doubtful the Senators have a global following, let alone an Ottawa Valley following). Watching the game Friday night was reminiscent of the many games us Habs fan had to endure in the second half of the season-that-shall-not-be-named (hint: it start with a 1 and ends with 00). No effort, no will to compete. Case in point: The sixth goal. Kostitsyn came in on the forecheck and was literally given the puck by Kuba, then passed to a totally open Plekanec, who passed to a totally open Eller and Kostitsyn was able to get to the net for the rebound....

Morning After: The Wounded (aka the game in Buffalo)

Morning After: The Wounded (aka the game in Buffalo)

I do hate to brag, but I believe in my post yesterday I predicted a 1-1 game that would be sent into overtime. I'm like some kind of gifted hockey-savant, I should start betting money on games, I could become a millionaire (except for the fact that I actually predicted the Habs would win, and my savant abilities don't seem to foresee the plethora of injuries the befell our team last night). As with all fans, the highlight for me last night was the PK Subban and Price love taps in the middle of a play. I'm a sucker for a good bromance, and I think the CPPK love affair is developing in to one of the best bromance story-lines of the season.

Montreal IS better than Toronto

November 22, 2010
By

It's true...when it comes to sports, Montreal is just a better city than Toronto. We shut them out Friday in hockey, and the score wasn't even close in the Eastern CFL semi-final yesterday. But, that's not what I want to talk about. I'm already a day late when it comes to the hockey game, and I know almost nothing about football. Besides, I am a little bitter that my statistical analysis that predicted a loss to the Leafs was wrong! This throws off my whole game, and now I don't know what the results will be tonight. Thanks a lot Price and the rest of the Habs for totally embarrassing and blanking the Leafs. Thanks a lot Komisarek for forgetting what team you are on, and assisting Cammy for the go-ahead goal.

Max Pac Gotta Keep his Mouth Shut!

November 4, 2010
By

For those that didn't hear it, Max Pacioretty went on the Team 990 and basically said that he wants to spend the season in Hamilton because he doesn't like the way Jacques Martin coaches. Alright...who is in charge of this young man, and why isn't someone coaching him on making media appearances?

The Weekend & Reasons for Love

A win, a loss – it was Halloween and I drank a bit too much on both nights to give any kind of actual opinion. I am glad the Habs won with Auld, and from what I remember about the Florida game, they looked a little sluggish and surprise-surprise, went zero for whatever on the powerplay. That's okay, Markov's back right? Because I write this blog now, I am much more aware of when I miss a game, or when I am only half-watching. I mean, they do play 82-games a season (plus pre-season, plus playoffs), so sometimes the living of my life happens and I miss a game. This blog isn't a money-making venture, and that's okay because I do quite well in the job I am in, so I don't have that much guilt when I do miss a game. I write this blog because I love...

I’d Rather Winnipeg

I’d Rather Winnipeg

A lot of talk in the past couple days about Quebec City, their attempts at getting funds for a new arena, and the desire for an NHL team to follow. If you build it, they will come...but in this case, I kinda hope they don't. Before I get on Pauline Marois's shit-list, let me explain why, if a seventh team comes to Canada, I'd rather it be Winnipeg over Quebec city.
